Sequential Undergraduate-Graduate Studies (SUGS) Program

Current University of Michigan undergraduate students in the following departments are eligible for SUGS:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Cellular and Molecular Biomedical Science (CMBS)
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
  • Industrial and Operations Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering & Radiological Sciences
  • Robotics

Application Requirements:

  • Senior Standing (85+ hours)
  • Students may not begin SUGS if they need more than one course (no more than 4 credit hours) to complete the BSE 
  • GPA of 3.2 or above
  • Biology 172 or 174 or AP biology credit for Biology 195
  • One Advanced Biology course* (ex, microbiology, immunology, genetics, or biochemistry) *For students in Biomedical Engineering, BME 221, 418, or 419 will fulfill this requirement.

**Students in non-BME majors who are missing the above Biology requirements will be required to take BME 418 or BME 419 to complete this requirement.

The GRE is not required and will not be accepted with the application.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is waived for students who have already taken it.

SUGS Application Deadlines:  Rolling admissions till January 15th for the next academic year

SUGS program applicants need to provide:

  • Personal Statement
  • Academic Statement of Purpose 
  • CV/Resume
  • Name and email address for two faculty members who will write letters of recommendation (a third letter is optional)
  • Unofficial University of Michigan transcript

SUGS students can take advantage of double-counting or transferring courses, but will be subject to the following requirements:

  • Full-time enrollment (nine credits) is required for two semesters. Graduate study must begin the semester immediately after undergraduate completion.
  • Up to six graduate-level credits can be double-counted. These courses must belong to one of the three course categories in this program: AI/ML Fundamentals, Domain Intersections, or Knowledge Extensions. Courses that are not part of these categories will not be allowed to be double-counted. 
  • Up to nine additional graduate-level credits may be transferred if they were not counted toward another degree, minor, or certificate. Such courses must also belong to one of the three course categories in this program: AI/ML Fundamentals, Domain Intersections, or Knowledge Extensions. Courses that are not part of these categories will not be allowed to be transferred.
