James M. Scheiman, MD is Professor of Medicine Emeritus, University of Michigan, where he was Director of Endoscopic Research and the Advanced Endoscopy Training Program until the fall of 2017. He was recruited to become the David Stone Professor and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as well as the medical director of the Digestive Disease service line at the University of Virginia thru July 2021. He transitioned to become the medical officer on the GI devices team at CDRH /FDA, retiring from the agency in 2025. In January 2026 he returned to this position in a consulting role.A Fellow of the American Gastroenterology Association as well as the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, and American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, he developed the first Endoscopic Ultrasound Program in the state of Michigan. He chaired the ASGE research committee for 4 years and has served on many study sections including those of the GI societies and NIH. His career began in a basic science laboratory studying factors relevant to the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease. He transitioned to a career in clinical trials, starting with investigator initiated as well as Industry sponsored research that pioneered the use of PPI co-therapy to reduce the bleeding risk associated with NSAIDs leading to new approaches which improved the care of patients globally. Recognition of his leadership in the ulcer prevention field lead to his first role in regulatory matters, serving on the FDA advisory panel reviewing Rofecoxib.
