U-M BME proudly announces that Zhongming Liu, Associate Professor, Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has been named the recipient of the 2026 BME Departmental Faculty Award from Michigan Engineering, an honor recognizing outstanding accomplishment and dedication to the mission and community of the department.
Dr. Liu, a leader in neuroengineering research and interdisciplinary education, was selected by a committee of peers who cited his innovative scholarship, commitment to teaching, and unwavering mentorship of students and early-career scientists.
“This award means a lot to me.” Dr. Liu said. “There is nothing more rewarding than being appreciated by my home department and the colleagues with whom I have the privilege of working.”
Since joining Michigan BME, Dr. Liu has established an internationally recognized research program focused on advanced brain imaging, neural interface design, and computational neuroscience to deliver impactful discoveries.
“Dr. Liu’s contributions extend far beyond his research lab,” noted Doug Noll, BME Interim Department Chair and Ann and Robert H. Lurie Professor, Biomedical Engineering and Professor, Radiology. “He’s deeply involved in curriculum development, supports student innovation, and fosters a department culture prioritizing curiosity and collegiality. This award reflects the appreciation our faculty and students have for his leadership.”
Liu’s mentorship is regularly celebrated by undergraduate and graduate students, many of whom credit his guidance for their academic and professional achievements. He has consistently championed collaborative projects, multidisciplinary solutions, and opportunities for students to pursue boundary-pushing work.
