Jan Stegemann, Professor, Biomedical Engineering, is Michigan Engineering’s 2026 recipient of the Monroe-Brown Foundation Education Excellence Award. This honor recognizes Dr. Stegemann’s extraordinary commitment to teaching, student success, and the enduring impact of his educational innovation.

“It is very gratifying to be recognized by my colleagues and students through this award,” said Dr. Stegemann. “Teaching has always been a large part of my professional identity, and it is a pleasure to watch our students learn and thrive.”

The Monroe-Brown Foundation is a Kalamazoo-based philanthropy dedicated to advancing quality higher education in Michigan. The Monroe-Brown Foundation Education Excellence Award was established in 2002 to celebrate faculty whose work embodies the foundation’s mission. Endowed gifts from the Monroe-Brown Foundation have enriched educational opportunities across U-M’s campuses since the memorial foundation’s founding in 1986.

Dr. Stegemann’s impact in BME is marked by sustained excellence in teaching, curriculum development, and mentorship. His nomination for the award highlighted, among other things, the unique and thoughtful approach he brings to transforming education for students pursuing careers in the MedTech field through the BME’s Advanced Medical Product Engineering and Development (AMPED) curriculum—a flagship Master’s program under his guidance.

“One thing that makes Jan stand out is how thoughtful and deliberate he has been in designing and implementing the AMPED curriculum,” colleagues noted in his nomination. “Each piece has been carefully constructed to reinforce the other curricular elements and create a holistic educational experience that prepares students for a successful career in the MedTech industry.”

Students and faculty alike emphasized Dr. Stegemann’s deep care and strategic vision. “Dr. Stegemann’s sustained excellence in teaching, curriculum development, and mentorship embodies the spirit of this award. His passion for education and his vision for the AMPED program have had a profound impact on my learning and professional growth,” shared a grateful student.

“The result of Jan’s efforts has been a space that has substantially improved our design program, and importantly, the space has become a location in which the various members of our community can gather. This effort was transformative to our department and to the education we can deliver.”
