Research Interests
Professor Stegemann’s research laboratory focuses on the use of extracellular environments to control cell function and promote tissue regeneration. The group’s work involves characterizing how cells interact with the 3D environment that surrounds them in native tissues, including the extracellular matrix, soluble biochemicals, and mechanical forces. The lab then uses this knowledge to create composite materials using proteins, polysaccharides, and synthetic polymers to direct cell function and to deliver cells for therapeutic purposes. Current application areas are in enhancing bone regeneration through cell therapy, and the development of multiphase engineered tissues that promote both bone and blood vessel formation. The lab also uses advanced imaging techniques to study mechanobiology and to characterize the mechanical properties of soft biomaterials.

Biography
Jan Stegemann is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Advanced Medical Product Engineering and Development (AMPED) program at the University of Michigan. His research interests are in the areas of biomaterials and cell-based therapies for cardiovascular and orthopaedic applications. His teaching activities are mainly in the areas of biomaterials, tissue engineering, and medical product development. In addition to his current roles, Dr. Stegemann has served as Associate Chair for Master’s Programs and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education in the Biomedical Engineering Department and has served on numerous faculty recruiting, curriculum development, and departmental planning committees. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Bioengineering Program at UM-Dearborn and serves on a number of government panels, including the FDA Advisory Committee (FACA) on Cellular, Tissue, and Gene Therapy. He holds leadership positions in several professional societies and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), a fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and a Fellow of Biomaterial Science and Engineering (SFB). He received BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
