Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Creating and Sustaining a Community of Inclusion That Champions Equity

Our department is committed to creating and sustaining a community that values diversity and champions equity and inclusion.

With the word Diversity, we mean all of the values and experiences that come from a multitude of cultures and experiences, including, but not restricted to, differences in race, ethnicity, age, gender and gender identity, language, religion, sexual orientation, ability or disability, and socioeconomic status.

By Equity, we are referring to the unbiased treatment of all individuals, and the promise of fair and equal access to all opportunities and resources, removing any barriers that may exist for marginalized groups.

Inclusion to us means welcoming, respecting and supporting all views and opinions, and ensuring that all individuals feel they belong.

Biomedical Engineering Highlights U-M Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Programs

The University of Michigan’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion includes four programming units – the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO), Nation Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID), Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI) and Wolverine Pathways (WP). Additionally, there are four central office units/teams to support the overarching work of ODEI, including the DEI Strategic Plan team, the Evaluation and Assessment unit, the Business Office unit, and the Communications and Marketing team. ODEI also leads multiple initiatives, including the University’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategic Plan, First Generation (FirstGen) Students initiative, Inclusive Teaching, and Undocumented/DACA Student Resources.

The DEI 2.0 strategic plan represents the University of Michigan’s continued commitment to ensuring a diverse, equitable and inclusive community with even more sharply defined goals, new innovations and investments, and enhanced measures of accountability—shaped and informed by our own university community. We will continue to test new ideas, assess our progress and have difficult conversations about tough issues. We will continue to listen, and we will learn as we move forward—together.

College of Engineering

Our dedication to engineering for the public good is inseparable from our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

We lead with an equity-centered engineering mindset in how we teach, do research and support each other.

The Michigan Engineering community includes people from different races and ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ages and socio-economic backgrounds. We speak different languages, come from different cultures and countries and practice different religions. We have different abilities and disabilities, different political perspectives and life experiences. We all belong here.

When the University launched its initial five-year strategic plan, as engineers we took the time to evaluate the how and why behind DEI. Through it, we identified the major challenges and obstacles and learned how to clear a better path through them. These initiatives are foundational to lasting change and will build a framework to allow us to become more effective in our efforts to address other critical matters, such as sexual misconduct, accessibility, harassment and more.
