NEST and urBME Co-Host Game Night

Students with the NEST and urBME organizations enjoyed a recent game night and networking event.

The U-M BME community came together for an evening of camaraderie and fun on November 4, as students, faculty, and staff participated in a game night co-hosted by BME-NEST and urBME. This informal event aimed to foster a sense of community while acquainting attendees with the goals and activities of these student-serving groups.

BME NEST is a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) program focused on building a supportive community for all BME students, particularly first-generation students, transfer and dual-degree students, the AMPED program, and those from underrepresented backgrounds or MSIs (Minority Serving Institutions). NEST connects students with BME peers, faculty and staff, and U-M allies through mentorship, professional development, and community-building events.

urBME is a new BME student organization and community that celebrates each member’s unique value while equipping students with the professional, academic, and personal skills needed to succeed. UrBME focuses on uplifting students from underrepresented backgrounds and is open to all.

“As a co-PI for BME-NEST, collaborating with urBME was a fantastic opportunity to support a new student organization and extend our shared goals and reach as we work together to foster a sense of support and belonging for all students,” Karen Gates, BME Student Career Planning and Alumni Engagement Coordinator. “The activities encouraged everyone to move around and connect—it was wonderful to see.”

Students enjoyed the opportunity to connect with each other so much that the session informally continued beyond the scheduled end time. The group spontaneously initiated plans for a pre-Thanksgiving event to support students unable to go home for the holiday. More details will be provided soon.
