Congratulations to Cheri Deng in Her New Leadership Role

Dr. Deng has been a valuable member of the U-M BME faculty since 2007.

U-M BME congratulates our colleague Cheri Deng, Professor, Biomedical Engineering, on her appointment as Chair of the Michigan State University BME Department, effective July 1, 2025.

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation for your support throughout the years,” Dr. Deng said. “I am grateful that I have had an amazing experience here at U-M BME, and I will miss everyone and everything here.”

Dr. Deng has been a valuable member of the U-M BME faculty since 2007, dedicating her career to advancing the understanding of the mechanistic interactions between ultrasound and biological systems. Her pioneering research efforts have led to the development of innovative techniques poised to improve disease diagnosis and treatment. With consistent support from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), her work includes ultrasound-mediated cell membrane poration (sonoporation) for non-viral drug and gene delivery, ultrasound imaging, novel ultrasound applications in tissue engineering, and acoustic tweezing cytometry for mechanobiology applications.

In addition to her research, Dr. Deng has been dedicated to mentorship and teaching. Her involvement in various professional activities, including serving as a committee member and grant reviewer, has greatly contributed to the advancement of the biomedical engineering field.

“We are very grateful to Cheri for her many contributions to the University of Michigan and to our BME Department,” said Mary-Ann Mycek, William and Valerie Hall Department Chair and Professor, Biomedical Engineering. “This is a wonderful professional opportunity for Cheri and while I am sorry to see her leave UM, I am delighted at her appointment to this leadership role and I’m confident that she will continue making a significant impact in the field of biomedical engineering.”

Please join us in celebrating Dr. Deng’s contributions to U-M BME and wishing her success in her new leadership role at Michigan State University.
