Faculty, Staff and Students Encouraged to Nominate BME Alumni for Michigan Engineering Alumni Awards by March 31

This is an excellent opportunity to highlight former U-M BME students who have exemplified our mission through their leadership and achievements. 

The Michigan Engineering Alumni Award process has been updated and simplified. In a change from the past, nominations will now be reviewed by College leadership, staff, and selected Michigan Engineering alumni volunteers. 

We encourage you to submit alumni nominations as soon as possible, since the deadline is coming soon on March 31. This is an excellent opportunity to highlight former U-M BME students who have exemplified our mission through their leadership and achievements. 

Instructions: The nomination requirements for all categories have been simplified to include just a 1-2 page letter and an optional one to two supporting documents. The engineering alumni community has been invited to participate through two emails, and departments have been asked to encourage faculty, staff, and students to submit nominations using the process outlined on their website.

There are three categories open for nominations:

To qualify for the Alumni Medal, nominees must be alumni of the University of Michigan College of Engineering – Ann Arbor Campus. Each nominee will be evaluated based on their display of the following qualities and contributions, though it is not necessary to possess every attribute listed:

Technical achievements: notable innovations and accomplishments in the engineering field

Entrepreneurial abilities: demonstrated success in business ventures and startups

Leadership: demonstrated ability to guide, inspire and influence others

Personal growth/reinvention: continuous self-improvement and adaptation to new challenges and opportunities

Contributions to the common good: positive impact through community involvement and societal contributions

Integrity: commitment to ethical principles

Foresight: vision for future needs and advancements

The Distinguished Alumni Service Award was established to honor a University of Michigan College of Engineering (Ann Arbor Campus) alumnus/alumna who has generously contributed their time and talent to further College projects and activities. Service may be directed toward the College as a whole or to an individual department. Nominees cannot be current members of the Michigan Engineering Alumni Board; former Board members are eligible for nomination.

Each nominee will be evaluated based on their display of the following qualities and contributions, though it is not necessary to possess every attribute listed:

Scope of contribution: the breadth and reach of the nominee’s efforts within the College

Introduction of new services or programs: successful implementation of innovative services or programs

Value/impact to students, faculty and alumni: positive effects and benefits provided to the College community

Effectiveness: demonstrated success and tangible results of the nominee’s contributions

Sustainability: long-term viability and lasting impact of the nominee’s efforts

Reproducibility/Scalability: potential for the nominee’s contributions to be replicated or expanded to a larger scale

Established in 2001, the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award is presented annually to an alumnus/alumna who has contributed substantially to his/her field. Nominees must have graduated from the University of Michigan College of Engineering (Ann Arbor Campus) within the last ten years or are no more than 35 years old. 

Each nominee will be evaluated based on their display of the following qualities and contributions, though it is not necessary to possess every attribute listed:

Leadership: demonstrated ability to guide, inspire and influence others

Technical achievements: Notable innovations and accomplishments in the engineering field

Contributions to the common good: positive impact through community involvement and societal contributions

Contribution/service to the College of Engineering: active support and engagement with the College, including mentoring, volunteering, or other forms of service

Personal growth/reinvention: continuous self-improvement and adaptation to new challenges and opportunities

Integrity: commitment to ethical principles
