Dr. Jiahe Li, Assistant Professor, Biomedical Engineering, in collaboration with Dr. Yatrik Shah, has received an annual Swim Across America – Motor City Mile grant to combat colorectal cancer (CRC) through innovative microbial engineering.
“The innovative aspect of our research is leveraging the bacteria’s self-protection mechanism against colibactin to develop a therapeutic agent that can be delivered directly to the gut,” said Dr. Li. “We hope this will provide a new and effective way to mitigate the carcinogenic effects of colibactin and improve cancer prevention strategies.”
Dr. Li’s research focuses on the development of molecular and live cell-based therapeutics. His goal is to combat colorectal cancer and other illnesses associated with pathogenic gut bacteria production.
